Leeks

I love potato leek soup. I really do. The taste is great and I have fond memories of my friend Courtney when I make potato leek soup. We had to make it for a project in German class once.

Anyway --- now that I'm on this cooking streak (not one inedible meal made yet!) I've decided to make potato leek soup for myself. The problem is -- until last night -- I didn't know what a leek looked like.

I went to Giant to find a leek. I'm in the fresh veggie section & there was a panel of 4 labels: Leeks, carrots, beet, and anisse. I know what carrots and beets are, so I only had to guess between the other two odd looking vegetables for the leek. I'm holding them. Neither has labels. I look around trying to find a Mom-type person to ask for help. There isn't a Mom in sight. I look around trying to find a Giant employee. No. Finally a girl my age, married and all, comes up and I bravely ask, "Excuse me...do you know what a leek is by any chance?" She giggled and blushed -- embarrassed because she didn't know either. So then I ask the nearest Giant employee who happens to be sitting behind the flower stand (Train of thought: flowers = plants/ Leeks=plants) . She doesn't speak English, really. I guess she just wraps flowers. She just pointed and said "Veggie-table depart". Yea, thanks. Finally, I asked this lady who was old enough to be my Mom. But unlike my Mom she had frizzy gray hair and a scowl on her face. Ugh -- maybe she was warm and fuzzy under those faded, tapered, black Jordache jeans? I hold up the veggies, "Excuse me ma'am? Do you know if THIS or THIS is a leek?" Confused she looked at the veggies, then at me, and told me that NEITHER was a leek. Apparently Giant was out of leeks today. Ashamed, I left.

After some research I'm going back for one more try! Now I know that Leeks look like one enormous green onion.
